How to be Young at Heart & Find Our Fountain of Youth

Still skipping rope! Imagine the freedom of riding a bike or still playing the sports you love. As we age, some of us find that our bodies don’t allow us to do the things that we once used to enjoy. When our body does not cooperate with our mind, we can become discouraged. Is it possible for our body to stay young? Can we encourage it to find that Fountain of Youth? How to be young at heart, again?

Is it possible to build our bodies back to regain our former strength? It is not easy, and it does not happen without effort. With effort, it can be done.

How to be Young at Heart

Before building the body, we need a youthful mindset. A determination that we are not going to just sit in the rocking chair. It takes determination to one day, with some effort to make a change in our thinking. “I can do this! I can make a difference!” It doesn’t happen overnight. Little by little, day after day, consistency is the key. Once we have decided that we are going to give it a go, we are on our way to seeing results.

Take Action

Several years back, I decided to join a weight loss group. You may hear me refer to it at various times now and again. Suffice it for me to say, it is more of a lifestyle management group than just about weight loss.

Joining TOPS has helped me immensely on my lifestyle journey. At TOPS, walking is a key component as the suggested way to get exercise. Ten thousand steps a day is a great way to keep healthy. It is not only good for weight loss, but its great for the heart, lungs, and every other organ of our body as well.

Be Ready to Adapt

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I am from Canada, and the weather is not conducive for me to get outside many months of the year to walk my 10,000 steps.  We have snow and ice on the ground, usually from November through March.

Having to sit in a chair all winter and look out the window! No Way! This brings me to the point of my blog.

There must be a way of staying active and still not falling on the ice or snow! I must learn how to be young at heart. Then my actions will follow.

I have explored various avenues of exercise for many years. But I had to find something that worked for me. I have tried various things, some with good results, and some with not so much success.

The first such experiment with exercise equipment that I recall, was when my mother moved in with me. It was difficult for her to get around in the Canadian winter, so we bought a recumbent bike. The house we lived in was large enough that I could easily put the bike in a spare room. I did use the bike, but not as much as I use the one that I have today.

Learn from Each Experience

As life happens, we moved into the city several years later, and we sold the bike. Now we were in a smaller 2-bedroom house. Why not get a smaller exercise bike and put it in the corner of the living room? I could watch TV while I pedaled on the bike.

That sounded like an excellent idea. However, the smaller bike came with a smaller seat. It might have worked for many people, but for me, it was not the answer. Well at least I had not bought the bike new, so donating it to a charity was not a loss.

I learned that I preferred the recumbent bike. With each experience, we can learn something, I still wanted some exercise equipment that I could have in my own home.

Quality Equipment – Get Something that Will Work for You

I wanted to get more exercise, and then I found it! We were at a yard sale and there it sat, an elliptical machine. That will be the answer, I thought! We purchased the machine, stowed in the back of the car and toted it home.

It found a place right beside my bed! The bedroom was already small, and the elliptical machine was not a high-quality one. I found it difficult to use… so there it sat, taking up space. Again, I sold that piece of equipment. Another lesson learned. The equipment you acquire needs to be of sufficient quality that it works well for you.

Research Before You Buy

Entering the era of online purchases: I knew I needed something that worked for me. It had to be at a price I could afford, and size for my limited space. This time I wanted it to last.

I found a Pilates Chair which sits nicely in a corner of the bedroom. I do not have the space to use all the capabilities of the chair, but I do use its basic function on a regular basis.

My ‘go-to’ item is my recumbent bike. Although it is larger than I wanted, the amount of use I get from it is well worth the space it takes up. It is in a less-used corner of the living room and is not easily noticed when you walk in the door.  I am happy with my last two purchases, and I get a lot of use from them both.

My Solution

The solution I have found for how I can be young at heart is to stay as active as possible in whatever surroundings I have available. Now with the season of snow here, I can get some exercise right at home. When I do get cabin fever, I can go to the mall and walk. With a mindset of, “I think I can”, so much is possible.

On my desk, I have a little saying from Samuel Butler, a 17th-century British poet:

“If we attend continually and promptly to the little that we can do,

we shall ere long be surprised to find

how little remains that we cannot do.”

There are many types of in-home exercise equipment available. I have tried the exercise bike, a Pilates chair, and an elliptical machine. More recently we also purchased a rebounder, or as some may call it, a mini trampoline. We found a corner for each piece of equipment in our snug little home. We exercise on a daily basis and following TOPS example, I go outside and walk in the summer time.

How to be young at heart and find our fountain of youth is a mindset we must have every day. You can be any age and still find your fountain of youth as you have a young attitude in your heart.

  1. “For as a man thinketh in his heart so is he”.. isn’t that the famous quote. What I personally believe is that we are a product of how we feel at our heart. Mistakes can sometimes be trivial. For it is through mistakes that we learn things.

Thank you taking the time to create both a post that is both informative and at the same time motivational for readers such as myself!

Looking forward to more of your works!

    • Thank you for your great comment. Yes it depends so much on how we look at things as to how we see life. I know know many seniors in their 80s who still have a young at heart attitude.

By keeping active, we can keep our bodies young as well. Some of it depends on genetics, but a lot of our health depends on how we take care of ourselves.

      All the best to you.

  2. You can get fit at home using bodyweight exercises alone, or you might invest in some free weights to increase the intensity of your strength training. And if you’d prefer to go all-in on cardio, there areseveral machines you can buy to use at home, like treadmills, exercise bikes and rowing machines.

Challenge yourself and avoid boredom. …
    Find an exercise partner. …
    Schedule your workouts. …
Use a journal to track your progress and jot down any breakthroughs you may have. …
Set goals, like training for a race or losing 20 pounds

    • I love your thoughts in the comments you gave. There are so many ways to get fit at home. Tracking your activities in a journal helps you realize what you have accomplished and how much more you would like to accomplish.

There are small pieces of equipment that take up little space in your home that can be a great help. Hand weights or even resistance bands will help.

If you can find an exercise buddy you are very fortunate indeed! It makes it easier to exercise every day. You become accountable to each other for your progress.

      Thanks for your comments!

  3. Thank you for your post. It is useful for me. I am closing to 60 years old. It is my topic on how to be young at heart and find our fountain of youth. I want to do something, but never take time to carry our the research.

Here comes your article. I particularly like your description on Take Action. I think so much, but do little, which drive me to nowhere. I take your advice and am going to start walk today. Though may not start with ten thousands steps, I will start with 5000 steps. I agree with you that the simple walk  not only good for weight loss, but also for the heart, lungs, and every other organ of our body.

The next action is to join a weight loss group. Right now my belly fat is the biggest concern for me. I need to take action to reduce it.

    • Walking is one of the best and safest forms of activity you can get. If you do it regularly it will slim the waist!

Belly fat is visceral fat. That is what we should try to get rid of when possible. It is fat that builds around our organs and will do damage. Walking is great to help there.

Start small, just start. Do a little today and a little more tomorrow. Before you know it you are quite healthy!

  4. I think just be carefree and enjoy the moment. You just enjoy what it is in front of you, to me that is a young at heart spirit. I do not mind skipping rope and I also enjoy the swing at the playground with my nephews.

I like to think and plan too much and forget to enjoy the current moment and I became old but I am working on that everyday.

As for me to I am very active. I live in NYC and I pretty much have to walk everyday and there are so many gyms around me so no excuse for me lol. I also love hiking, there is something about walking that lessens my stress and I feel great.

Good for you that you make the use of your equipment 🙂 Mine is a little dusty but will try to use it lol

  5. Certain celebs somehow seem to age in reverse. Besides skipping sugar-because really, who would want to do that for a lifetime? Are there secrets to beat the constantly-ticking aging clock? Absolutely, experts say. (And no, you don’t need an array of crazy pills and potions.) All you  need to do to reverse aging  is take action, always give yourself break, learn  to consume more  healthy fats, get off the couch – do plenty of exercise,  feel love, laugh often -be happy,  choose young friends to be  around and  other examples listed in this articles and bet me you won’t believe the  changes you will see.

    Thanks for the article

    • Thank you for your comment. I loved to hear your advice on how to beat the constantly-ticking aging clock. Plenty of exercise, love, laughter and happiness with a healthy diet all sounds pretty good to me.

If you treat your body well, it will usually respond that way to you. By taking care of it you can usually expect it to work well for you for many years.
