There have been a variety of studies on apple cider vinegar and how it benefits your health.

The studies have been small, but they seem to point to the benefits of apple cider vinegar in treating obesity, improving blood cholesterol levels, reducing blood pressure, and helping with blood sugar management. .

What is Apple Cider Vinegar?

  • Apple cider vinegar is made from apples which have been fermented. During fermentation, the natural sugars of the apple are broken down to produce ethanol. This is then converted to acetic acid.
  • Apple cider vinegar has no calories, since it doesn’t contain carbohydrates, fat, or protein.
  • Organic unfiltered ACV contains the “mother” which is the acetic acid bacteria and enzymes.
  • There is a small amount of potassium in ACV.
  • ACV has a pH of about 2 to 3.

Unfiltered Organic Apple Cider Vinegar

What is the difference between apple cider vinegar that has been pasteurized and filtered, compared with that which is cloudy with the “mother” in the bottom of the bottle?

The “mother” in the bottom of the unpasteurized apple cider vinegar has some probiotic bacteria and yeast.

Nourish by WebMD wrote a post on the benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar. They noted that there were three areas where ACV had some scientific evidence of its benefits were in blood sugar control, weight loss, and lowered cholesterol.

Other Surprising Home Remedies Using Apple Cider Vinegar

Eczema

The term eczema covers a variety of inflamed, red, or itchy skin conditions. There is no cure for eczema, but there are many treatments to manage the condition. One alternative therapy is apple cider vinegar.

It is inconclusive. Some reported ACV was soothing to the skin and boost moisture levels in the skin, while others found it did not help with eczema, but rather caused further irritation.

GERD

GERD or chronic acid reflux.

Some claim that raw apple cider vinegar offers probiotic benefits that can help with digestion. Dilute a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a cup of warm water. Drink before or after each meal. As a word of caution: don’t lie down right away after taking ACV. Give yourself about 30 minutes in an upright position.

Oral Thrush

Oral Thrush is a fungal infection the affects the mouth. Apple cider vinegar is one at home remedy that some people try. Take 1 teaspoon raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar, diluted in 1 cup of water. Rinse your mouth with the solution daily.

Not to be used with babies or children.

Inflammation and Chronic Pain

A study conducted in mice showed that ACV helped control inflammation and chronic pain. While these findings are hopeful, they are not proven in humans.

Ways to Take Apple Cider Vinegar

ACV is available in capsules, gummies, and tablets! If you find the taste of ACV unpleasant, you could use Natural Apple Cider Vinegar Powder in your food preparation.

Risks and Side Effects

ACV is an acid. You should not drink straight apple cider vinegar or drink it in large quantities. It can erode the enamel of your teeth and damage your tissues if not used properly.

Dilute 1 to 2 Tbsp of vinegar in a large glass of water. You should take a glassful of water afterwards and rinse your mouth out. The acid may erode the enamel on your teeth. So, rinse your mouth out well.

In Conclusion

People have opinions both for and against the use of apple cider vinegar for weight loss. However, a number of small studies do suggest that apple cider vinegar is a useful home remedy for treating obesity, improving blood cholesterol levels, reducing blood pressure, and helping with blood sugar management.

  1. I am so glad I came across this post because I’m not only learning about the usability of apple vinegar for weight loss, but now I’m also learning that this also has some great benefits for blood sugar management. As a diabetic I always love to learn new strategies to keep both my body and blood sugar levels in a good place. Will definitely have to try apple vinegar.

    1. Hi Stephanie, and thanks for stopping by with a comment! I found it interesting that the European journal of clinical nutrition and the pharmacist in the YouTube both gave a medical opinion about it. It was not a non-medical opinion that someone had.

If you have a medical condition, it is always safest to work with your healthcare provider, and keep track of your own blood sugar levels also.

  2. Hi, I’m pleased to read about the advantages of apple cider vinegar. I had no idea it could aid with blood sugar management, enhance blood cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, and treat obesity. This is truly fantastic news to hear. I’m also glad to learn how apple cider vinegar is produced. Knowing that it can help with eczema, GERD, and oral thrush makes it even more desirable. Thank you for informing us that ACV should not be consumed straight or in big quantities.

    Excellent article.

    1. Hi Lionel, thanks for stopping by with a comment! I found it interesting that there are scientific studies to show the efficacy of those claims. Some things like eczema, GERD, and oral thrush, may be home remedies, but when science stands behind lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol levels, and obesity, that makes a stronger argument for the case.

I found it particularly interesting in the YouTube of the pharmacist, that after using apple cider vinegar it lowered his cholesterol levels that were previously always high.

  3.  Great article, and I have seen a lot lately on how good apple cider vinegar is for weight loss. I tried it for a few days in a glass of water but the taste was awful.

Do you know of a better way of drinking this so that it is more palatable?

As I was reading all the other benefits in your article that I wasn’t even aware of, I was glad to see that Apple Cider Vinegar comes in capsule form, so I think I will definitely try this method and hopefully it will be easier to take and just as beneficial.

    1. Hi Michel, thanks for stopping by with a comment. I do agree that the taste leaves something to be desired. When I was first introduced to drinking apple cider vinegar in water, it was used as a tonic. It was not the best tasting either. I was told to put 1 to 2 Tablespoons full of Apple Cider Vinegar in a quart jar, add 1 tsp ginger, with some stevia, and fill the jar with water. This was to be sipped throughout the day. If you sip it through a straw it should do less damage to the enamel on your teeth.

I do know some who want the benefit of Apple Cider Vinegar and use capsule or pill form as an alternative way of taking it.

  4. Apple cider vinegar has so many health benefits indeed! I myself take some everyday! I drink some every morning in a big glass of water. It does help with weight management. I buy organic so that there is this precious « mother » at the bottom. Thank you for this article that reminds me how good it is to keep fit.

In researching this article, what impressed me was the scientific studies that have been done, and the pharmacist saying how he was helped by using apple cider vinegar. I too try to purchase it with the mother. I like to dilute it in my 3 cup water bottle and sip it throughout the day. I am careful to dilute is so it is not too strong.
