A Review of 6 Aerobic Steppers for 2023

Aerobic steppers have been around for decades and are still here – because they work! They deliver results! With an aerobic stepper, as you step up and down from the platform in different patterns you increase your breathing, heart rate, and strengthen your muscles. This post is a review of 6 aerobic steppers.

There are three types of steppers: the mini stepper, the aerobic stepper, and the stair climber.

The aerobic stepper usually has three levels. For the lowest intensity workout, the aerobic stepper lies flat on the floor without the risers. The more levels you add to the platform, the more intense your workout will be.

If you have hip, foot, ankle, or knee pain, begin at the lowest level. Consult with your doctor or other health care provider if the pain continues. As always, when starting a new exercise routine, please consult with your physician or health care provider first.

What Is an Aerobic Stepper?

The aerobic stepper is a raised platform that is adjustable in height for the comfort of its user. It is often adjustable in 2-inch increments, so it is at a comfortable height to step onto it.

An aerobic stepper provides portable low-impact exercise. It is designed to help people get aerobic exercise whenever they have time and a place that is convenient for them. You can even take a virtual class while you are at home.

It is a perfect way to up the intensity of planks, push-ups, and lunges by placing one or both of your feet on a riser.

Who Can Use It?

It is made for adults who desire low-impact exercise. If you travel, have inclement weather, or work long hours, it can be especially useful by its portable design. You will not be hindered by lack of space, travel, or the weather. The mini-stepper is the smallest of the three types of steppers.

Where Is It Used?

It can be used in gyms and fitness classes. Due to its portable nature, it can easily be used at home and stored under the bed or in a closet when not in use.

American Heart Association Recommendations

According to the American Heart Association, you need to get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week, or at least 75 minutes per week of vigorous aerobic activity, or a combination.

You should add moderate-to high-intensity resistance training at least twice a week.

For even more benefits, gradually increase that amount over time to at least 5 hours per week.

Benefits of Using a Stepper

  • It is financially affordable.
  • Engages and strengthens your core.
  • Strengthens your heart, calves, and thigh muscles.
  • Raises your metabolism and helps you burn calories.
  • Reduces tension. Exercise gets your feel-good endorphins flowing.

There Are Several Types of Steppers.

  • The mini-stepper is small and portable.
  • Aerobic steppers are raised platforms that can be adjusted to different heights to suit individual preferences.
  • A larger version, the stair climber, is often found in gyms or fitness clubs.

The Mini-Stepper and the Stair Climber

The mini-stepper may take a bit more effort to stay balanced while using. You step on the two ‘up and down’ foot pedals and pedal your feet up and down. Step up with the right foot, then the left foot. Then step down with the right foot, and then the left foot, and repeat.

What to Look for in a Stepper.

  • Comfortable height
  • Stable, strong, and firm
  • Shock absorbent
  • Size to allow for free movement for safety during your workout
  • Slip-resistant

There are different types of steppers. They all provide cardiovascular exercise and a strong workout for the legs and the hips.

To offer muscle training to all major muscle groups, you would need to add strength training to your upper body. You could maximize strength training by holding hand weights or resistance bands while using the stepper.

To Avoid Injuring Yourself

  • Avoid bouncing off the aerobic stepper. This could injure your ankles by the unnecessary impact on your feet.
  • Adjust the aerobic stepper to your height to make the move easier while you lift your feet on and off the stepper.
  • Place your entire foot on the stepper while going up and down, to avoid injuries to your leg.

I would love to hear from you. Have you used a stepper in a gym or at home?

  1. The goal of keeping fit is possible to be achieved with such innovative flow such as this aerobics stepper. I really like every bit of what they are capable of doing.

I really like this post here and thanks so much for sharing. Seeing that there are multiple uses of the aerobic steppers,I figured it could be used for the general good. Thanks

    • The aerobic stepper can give you a good cardio workout! By raising your heart rate, it gets your blood circulating and your lungs a good workout. You can go at your own pace. The more intense the workout then less time is needed to provide the same benefit as a more moderate workout.

Its practical size, makes it useful in any size home or apartment.

  2. I have been paying little attention to proving some essentials in my house when it comes to having some devices I can use for exercise and I feel bad about it now that I am home.

The Aerobic Stepper is one device I find really fascinating and its feature of increasing ins height makes it really cool for more than just one user. With a device that can help with the heart rate, i don’t see any reason why every household shouldn’t own one.

    • The aerobic stepper has been used in gym classes for a long while. I still have a picture in my mind of the aerobic classes with the lively music playing as the participants did different step work on their aerobic steppers.

Now that so many of us are at home, a stair step or a curb can be used in its place. Steppers are adjustable to suit anyone’s ability since a stair step may be too high for some to use comfortably.

  3. Oh, I didn’t know much about an aerobic stepper until now. The portability is a very unique feature that makes me give it a really good thumbs up right now. Something I would like to get for my home. It would have been nice to get some pictures for the reviews of those steppers though your description makes do for that. Do you know if they have any warranty for those products?

    • The convenience of the stepper makes it so useful.  So many of us are at home in need of a way to burn off our excess energy! This little piece of equipment can be tucked away in any corner of our house when we are not using it.

Most aerobic steppers are pretty basic pieces of equipment with very little to go wrong with them. I would need to explore further into each brand as to what their warranty is.

  4. This is a great thing and I think everyone should have it. Because of its benefits and convenience when shopping, I think everyone can afford it. I just like it because it’s portable and you can exercise at home if the weather is bad or you don’t feel like going to the gym.

    • Hi Bojana, thanks for stopping by with a comment. I remember seeing stepper classes at the gym long ago, and marveled at the aerobic exercise they got! Now we have not one but two steppers in our home. They are a great way to get your heart rate up, and give you good cardio exercise. They are easy to store in a very little space and easy to bring out when you are ready to exercise.

  5. I’m glad I read your article, because I see that there are a lot more options (including some that are even relatively inexpensive) than I had anticipated.  I prefer to do my cardio jogging on a treadmill, but as I grow older I feel the need for lower impact alternatives.

That Sunny stepper looks very tempting at just a bit over $100.  It may be priced on the low end, but I think Sunny is an excellent brand.  Plus, the stepper looks well designed and sturdy.  So I think that it’s a steal at that price.

Thank you for suggesting this stepper.  It helped me identify a very reasonably priced stepper that I might have missed browsing on my own.

    • Hi George, I am glad you found some useful information on this post. Yes, Sunny Health & Fitness is a reputable brand that offers a wide assortment of fitness equipment. Sunny’s stair stepper is a great piece.

Many people do enjoy jogging, but the effect is hard on the joints. Using a low-impact alternative is a great way to stay in shape.

  6. Hello!

I didn’t know that aerobic steppers were still around in 2022, I thought that no one was using them anymore haha. But why not, it looks like they can still get me a decent workout! It is so true that these hardly require any room in my house, like other bigger machines would! I will just slide it under my bed indeed!  Thank you for showing these reviews, I am going for number 2!

    • Hi Lizzy, thanks for stopping by with a comment. Yes, aerobic steppers are still alive and well. LOL. They give a great cardio workout. You can find from beginners to high-intensity workout classes on YouTube. Why not give it a try?
